Best Raised Garden Bed Kits for Beginners (Metal vs Cedar vs Self-Watering)
Metal modular vs cedar vs self-watering: which kit for which yard and budget.
Updated 2026-09-10
Quick verdict
- Most people: a 17 in tall modular metal bed (Vego or Birdies). Cheapest per year, deep enough for everything, assembles in an hour.
- Patio or bad back: an elevated cedar planter. Waist high, but shallow: greens and herbs, not root crops.
- Busy or forgetful: Vegepod. Self-watering reservoir and a cover that keeps out cabbage moths and cats.
- Tight budget: build a 4×8 from untreated 2×10 lumber for about $60; expect 3–5 years.
| Kit | Height | Footprint options | Material | Lifespan | Approx. price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vego Garden 9-in-1 | 17 in | 9 layouts up to 3.5×6.5 ft | galvanized, powder-coated steel | 20+ yrs | $190 |
| Birdies Original | 15 in | 6 layouts | Aluzinc steel | 20+ yrs | $200 |
| Vegepod Medium | 10 in + legs | 3.3×6.5 ft | polyethylene with reservoir + mesh cover | 10+ yrs | $400 |
| Elevated cedar planter | 10 in (waist high) | 2×4 ft typical | cedar | 8–12 yrs | $250 |
What actually matters when choosing
- Height. 15–17 in grows carrots, potatoes and tomatoes without a deep dig underneath. 10–12 in is fine for greens and herbs.
- Width. 4 ft max. Anything wider means stepping into the bed.
- Soil volume. A 4×8×17 in bed needs about 1.7 cubic yards of mix (roughly 45 bags). Budget for it.
- Assembly. Metal kits are bolts and a wrench. Cedar kits are screws and a square. Both under two hours.
Metal vs cedar, honestly
Metal beds warm faster in spring (good) and their soil dries faster in July (mulch). Cedar looks better against a house and stays cooler. Neither leaches anything harmful; galvanized zinc and cedar tannins are both fine for food beds.
